aawservice.exe is the executable file that is the heart of the AAW2007 engine. Current malware operates at the kernel level, or even as rootkits, so to fight those you have to be at the same level they are. You can't get to the kernel level from the API, it requires the use of services and drivers. See Lavasoft Support Forums at following link for more details. More information

It is not necessary for this process to be a start up program if your using the free version. Use your run program, type in services.msc Find the ad-aware service, right click on that and select manual insted of automatic. This way you will save on some system resources and the program will still run when you access it.

It is not necessary for this process to be a start up program if your using the free version. Run 'services.msc' find 'Lavasoft Ad-Aware' and select manual instead of automatic. This way you will save on some system resources and the program will still run when you access it.

I had updated the Adaware software and a bit later (probably after rebooting) my computer was running very slow. I thought is was a virus or something else malicious. I started back up in the safe mode and begain running scans... Ultimately I looked at the Task manager to see what was still slowing things down and saw the Ad-Aware software had 97% of my computer's attention most of the time. I follwed the instructions above to switch those services to manual and I am back up and running fine. And to think I was contemplating a format and reinstall process! Probably should after 3+ years on the same OS install. Thank you guys for you help! Curt A.

Felix, Rightly put! I regret to mention that I now have to rate this software "Neutral". I am currently using the Free Licensed Anniversary Edition of Lavasoft Ad-Aware. Has Lavasoft integrated into this free version a change in the Update Service Package, wherein a Server Definition Update performs on a scheduled level now? Allow me to be more specific. I click on the Update feature and nothing happens, which is making me believe that the free version is not allowing the user to perform daily updates anymore from the server. I have not noticed any updating processes running within my OS from Lavasoft either. Can somebody please help me with this. I believe it is critical to my OS Environment that this software package perform it's update function from the Core Service Definition's Database frequently, even allowing the customers to perform manual updates for themselves. I am old fashioned and I like to perform these tasks by myself. But now, I do not even know if this is an option for me any longer. The Critical and Living Question is, has Lavasoft taken this feature away from its faithful users? Quick, somebody help me!

En ouvrant Ad-Aware free celui-ci nous offre une mise à jour du logiciel mais il ne réussit pas à l'installer car la suppression de ma version ne se désinstalle pas, même avec le panneau de configuration!

This is trustworthy, I've used Ad-aware for years and its solved many a bad PC's ills but as stated by others here it is very hungry and not necessary to be automatic if running free version. My hard disk much quieter after implementing the change in services recommended by Ritch58 above, Thanks Ritch.

aawservice.exe is the executable file that is the heart of the AAW2007 engine. I run it at start up and have never had a problem with it taking up too much of my CPU's attention. Ad-Aware is heuristic and I like to have it running in the background all the time, I have mine set to Automatic instead of manual and absolutely love this application.
