| You don't need it to start. It just uses up memory. It is a quick start program for scanning. All you have to do is start the program and wait and extra 3 seconds

| ssbkgdupdate.exe is a process which belongs to the Scansoft Product Updater which provides software updates for ScanSoft products. This program is a non-essential process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems or because of limited memory.

| It's not exclusively for Canon printers. Omnipage has been around since before Canon even made printers I'm fairly certain. I have the program and my printer is a Brother. I do have a Canon camera, but I don't think that's where it came from
