| It is Java's update scheduler and should be safe if downloaded or installed from trusted source and can be disabled if you prefer manual updating when in use. But, why all the different ratings? I downloaded straight from the java site. Hmmm' More information

| well from all this crap i am supposing that it is unnecesarry considering every app can be manually updated and on the - side clearly auto update can cause compatability issues so it's a no no for me ^^

| This SunJava is required if you take college classes online , but i don't think that it has to be in the startup folder.
|
 Jota
| It is simply unnecessary and, moreover, it is just another program running on the background dumping (or would it be "dumbing"?) your system performance. Switch it off!
|

| This is good to have to inform the average user that their version of Java is out-of-date.
If you are conscientious enough to update yourself, you don't need it, but it is very important to keep Java updated and remove the old versions.
|
 Ilgaz
| There has been several security updates related to java and if you disable it you will have to check them manually looking to Sun site. Major Java updates will be missed too. There is no reason to disable it. It is plain C and not Java, a tiny program uses 2MB of RAM with zero CPU.
Sun better make it auto exit though. More information

| It's legitimate, and it's important to keep Java updated, but the updater can cause trojans to be downloaded. The best thing is to completely uninstall and cleanly reinstall the new version. More information

| This is NOT needed to run Java scripts. This searches for updates to your Java plugin. You can download them from their site when you need them.

| Waste of resources. No need for any program to have a separate program that checks for updates... they should only check when they are run.
